Cover Reveal + Giveaway - The Hurricane

Series: The Storm #2
Release date: March 2014

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Ever since the storm that changed Millicent, and her brother’s lives, giving them storm powers, Millicent had never been truly happy, but with Felix back, and all of them together, things were just like they used to be before the storm—minus the 17th century—it was time to try school again, but together this time, and without everything that almost separated them again. But just as everything was falling back into a normal steady pace, things start to fall apart again. A new enemy, Tyler, doesn’t want them to be around, he wants them dead, wants to finish what his cousins failed to do months before.

Millicent tells the others to start training, getting ready for the fight that is sure to come, but things fall apart farther and farther, until Millicent is just holding onto a thread, and that thread is Felix. But only for a time. Because sometimes, even love has its limits. Even though that love had time to grow and strengthen.

With the new threat looming over their heads, the family scattered, Millicent isn’t sure how this will end happily, for her, for Felix, for her family. Especially with something comes into Felix and Millicent’s life, and changes it forever.

Will they all be able to come together again, and face the threat? Or will they bend to those who wish to destroy them?

The Hurricane Excerpt

I turned and looked around, I spotted a park bench, and then I saw someone with dark brown hair sitting on it. “Michael!” I cried, I ran towards the bench, and Michael turned around. I stopped in front of the bench, and Michael looked away. I sat down next to him, slowly. “You ok?”

Michael put his head in his hands. “Everyone keeps asking that. But no, I’m not ok. I wish people would stop asking me that.”

“But we just care about you—”

Michael’s head shot up, and the wind blew a little stronger than it had been. “I’ve heard that too. From some of my friends, but then…they just decided that they didn’t care anymore.” He stood up, and I watched him sadly. I saw Matthew get out of the car and walk towards us.

“Things are just hard right now, alright? Everything will go back to normal here soon—” I tried.

Michael laughed, and put his hands in his pockets. “No, Millicent, they’re not going to back to normal. Ever since we found Felix—”

“Don’t blame this on him.” I said sternly.

“You thought the same thing though!” he turned to look at me. “While I was lying on a cold floor, dying. But now that everything is just great, you don’t even spend time with me or even Matthew anymore. Even your cat, it’s all about Felix now, isn’t?”

I felt like I just got all the air sucked out of my lungs. I swallowed, I felt the lightning crawl into my hands. That hurt as much as it made me angry. “We’re not boyfriend and girlfriend, I’m his wife. I’m supposed to spend time with him. If this was back then, I wouldn’t even be living with you guys. I would most likely only see you once a month or even that.”

“But this isn’t ‘back then’ is it, Millicent? It’s the twenty first century, where most couples live with their families until they can get back on their feet. And if you’re so keen on the idea of leaving me and Matthew, go ahead, go off and live with Felix.” He started to walk away, but Matthew came out of nowhere, and grabbed him by the arm, that’s when the rain started to fall. I took in a deep breath, trying to keep the lightning inside. The wind picked up.

“You apologize right now.” Matthew his voice was even, but I heard it crack a little.

Michael yanked his arm away. “No, Matthew. I’m done with this. I was done with this a long time ago, but I didn’t want to go anywhere because I thought ‘oh hey, they still want me’ but I have a feeling that you guys don’t want me anymore. Am I right?”

“That’s not true.” I said quietly, my tears mingled with the rain.

“But it is.” Michael snapped, he turned back to Matthew, who was trying to keep himself together. “I’m done with this, I’m done with this family. You guys can go back to the ‘love of your lives’ and I’ll go find something to do with my miserable and immortal life.” He turned on his heel and started to walk to his car. I let out a sob, and Matthew just watched him walk away.

My feet got a mind of their own. I took off after my brother. “Michael!” I sobbed, I caught up with him, but he didn’t stop walking. I wrapped my arms around his waist, and started to sob. “Don’t leave.” I sobbed into his shirt.

He stilled, but he didn’t put his arms around me like he would do if Michael wasn’t leaving me.

“Don’t leave me.” I sobbed. “Please don’t.”

Michael pried my arms off around him, “Goodbye, Millicent.” He said quietly. He turned around and jogged the rest of the way to his car, he got in, started it, and drove away. I fell onto my knees, and sobbed.

He was gone.

Leila swallowed the lump in her throat. "How do you know that?"

"Because I've seen what it does to a person," Edon said. "That little girl deserves better."

Photographs.

Images. Snapshots in time.

This is how I experience my life. I’ve hidden behind my camera and viewed the world through the lens. I watch other people live their lives. I’ve given up on my dreams, and sheltered my heart from love; because both have given me nothing but pain. Even thinking about opening myself up, sends my fears into overdrive. It’s better to be safe, than to take a risk and have your life shattered into pieces alongside your heart. This is what I believed.

Dangerous.

Risks. Fear Nothing.

I live for the rush of adrenaline I get when I work my stunts. Nothing else matters but the feel of my heart pounding when I challenge the line between life and death. Women are nothing more than a distraction; they use me for my connections, as I use them to escape the pain of my past before moving on to my next adrenaline fix. My life is consumed with excitement, danger and risks—it’s all I needed.

Denials.

Fear. The complete wrong time.

Jasmin and Jet will face off over photos, stunts and the truth hidden in their hearts. The last person Jasmin wants to be with is a man who takes life for granted. Jet wants to give his heart to no one; especially one who might not understand the secrets that haunt him. Despite their protests, Jasmin’s and Jet’s lives tangle; the threads of love and fear bind them. Between their passions and their pasts, they fight to hang onto each other . . . but will the stakes be too high when faced with the ultimate sacrifice?

** 18+ for adult situations, sexual situations and language.

Cover Reveal of Malicious Mischief and $25 Gift Card Giveaway

Malicious Mischief (Mischief and Mayhem, #1)
 by Marianne Harden

Career chameleon, Rylie Keyes, must keep her current job. If not, the tax assessor will evict her ailing grandfather and auction off their ancestral home. When a senior she shuttles for a Bellevue, Washington retirement home winds up dead in her minibus, sticky with a half-eaten s'more, head clad in a cellophane bag, and a pocketed complaint letter accusing her of driving by Braille, her goal to keep her job hits a road bump.

The deceased was thought to be a penniless Nazi concentration camp survivor with a silly grudge against Rylie. However, the victim has enemies who will stop at nothing to keep their part in the murder a secret.

Forced to dust off the PI training she's kept hidden from her ex-detective grandfather, Rylie must align with a circus-bike-wheeling Samoan to solve the murder, all while juggling the attentions of two very hot police officers.

Excerpt
~When the chips are down, the buffalo is empty~

Am I a flake? Sort of. But I’m trying to change. My grandfather has property tax issues, and what troubles Granddad, troubles me. Good thing I’ve held down a steady job for months. A major big deal. Not the getting a job part—I’ve had lots—but the held down aspect. Somehow, I always end up unemployed, but not today. Today, I am Rylie Tabitha Keyes, chauffeur to the seniors at Fountain of Youth Retirement Home (FoY.) It was dawn Sunday as I eased my employer’s van from one freeway onto another. After that, I concentrated on the wet asphalt up ahead. I didn’t want to think about my job history or our financial woes. Instead I focused on the summery sunrise over the Cascade Mountains due east. I stared at it a moment, charmed by its contrast to the more typical Bellevue, Washington gloom brooding overhead. I should’ve been asleep, but I needed to toss trash from a fundraiser rolling around in the back of the van. Leland Rosenberg, my boss at Fountain of Youth Retirement Home, had asked me to dump the bags at his second business, Rosenberg Laboratory, as FoY’s Dumpsters were full from a recent bathroom remodel. His mood had been edgy, kind of insistent I dispose of them last night. I confess, before I could carry out this task, a minor traffic accident and an all-important overnight obligation had waylaid me. I didn’t bother to sigh over how blunders always seemed to pepper my work performance. Some things were fated to be. After all, I slogged at my job for money not joy. It isn't that I don't like working at FoY, it just isn’t my dream gig. You see, I yearned to be a private detective, a Veronica Mars 2.0. Problem is, my grandfather is against the idea. Dead set against it. So with the stench from the trash bags mounting, I steered FoY’s van onto the off-ramp and headed toward Rosenberg Laboratory just off the freeway exit. My mind was filled with thoughts of a steamy shower, maybe a few hours of shut-eye before punching the clock at nine. I stared forward, squinted. And iced over. Up ahead. Wrong-way traveling. A panel truck advanced, peeling rubber. Faster. Closer. Zeroed in to hit me. I whipped the van off the road, the red, white, and blue panel truck whizzing past. I slammed on the brakes, fighting to control the wheel. I wrestled with it, panicked, my mind flashing on one fortunate thing: no seniors were in the van. Tons of hazards burst before my eyes. I struggled to absorb them. A mangled guardrail zigzagged up ahead; its many gaps from other out-of-control vehicles big as life. Worse was the wall of giant Douglas-firs growing beyond, lower trunks scarred, limbs low and swaying. I was going to careen through the railing. I was going to hit the trees. I was going to die.

The Rising King (Keepers of Life, #3)
by Shea Berkley

Baun sends Dylan to find a powerful magic that stop the Dark Souls, a magic so strong that Baun hid it so no one else could use it. When Dylan doesn’t expect to find along with it, are consequences that could end the lives of those closest to him.

Excerpt

I ease my hand into Kera’s and lace our fingers together, bringing her deep violet eyes onto me. They sweep over my face, and the edges of her full lips curve upward as if she’s fighting a smile. She sets aside the book and leans close bringing the scent of summer with her. “You scared me to death.” I love it when she worries about me. When it comes to my life, someone caring enough to worry is sort of a new thing. “You do that all the time to me.” I tug her hand and bring her closer so I can snag a quick kiss. Kera pushes away, but I don’t let go. The look she throws me is serious. “I’m not kidding, Dylan. You have to be more wary, especially when it comes to creatures like the millispits.” “I didn’t die.” It’s a reminder that’s kind of obvious. “Because I saved you.” “What’s that make? Two for me and one for you?” She leans back, testing the limits of our reach. “Are you keeping score?” “No…” I hate getting caught like that, and slowly pull her back toward me, “…it just sounds like I am, but I’m not.” I pull her right off her chair and onto the bed and on top of me. I bury my face in her hair and breathe deeply. No one smells as good as Kera. “Was anyone else hurt?” I ask even as I place little kisses along her jaw. She stretches her neck back for me. “Leo received a splinter.” “Ummm,” I say, enjoying the feel of her skin against my lips. “Will he live?” “To see Lucinda hover over him after we got back, you would not think so. She very clearly said we were not allowed to take him anywhere without her.” I twist and flip her onto her back until I’m hovering over her. As seriously as I can, I say, “Lucinda’s crazy. You know that, right?” “I am aware of a few odd peculiarities that make up her personality.” She brushes my hair back and twirls a piece over my ear. “With that said, she does seem to honestly care for Leo.” “Like an owner does a pet. But for how long?” I ask, more to myself than to her. “As long as it pleases her to do so, I imagine.” I’m not in the mood to dwell on Lucinda and what her agenda might be. All I want is to hold Kera. I nibble just below her ear and she giggles. I love the sound of her laughter. I stop and place my forehead to hers. “And how long will you care for me?” “My heart would be crushed if I were to never see you again. I would die a thousand deaths every Are those actual tears in her eyes? “My heart is crushed every time I see you and I can’t kiss you.” I’ve never said a sappier statement, or a truer one. She places a sweet kiss on my lips. “That rarely happens.” I kiss her back, and say against her lips, “Because you crave my kisses.” She laughs and pushes free. Rolling to her feet, she says with a smile, “Because I like to kiss.” “Me,” I say, popping up on my elbows. “You like to kiss me.” Her smile widens. I snatch her hand. She’s adopted wearing a wide, tight leather bracelet on her right wrist. It’s etched and embossed with a swirling pattern that is so Kera, I can’t remember when she didn’t wear it. We do a quick, playful game of tug of war before I yank her back. “Tell me you love me.” She winds her arms around my neck and smothers my face with tiny kisses. “I love you madly.”

She lives in Illialei, a country in the Enchanted World, with her two sisters and their mother. Melia’s father has been exiled to the Mortal World, and her best friend is a pixie.

When the story opens in the first book, Melia is troubled by her dark moon visions, gossip she overhears about her parents at the local market, and the trauma of living among full-blooded faeries with wings—she doesn’t have any.

As the series unfolds, the historic and mystical forces that shape Melia’s life are revealed. Each step of her journey—to find the place where she belongs—alters her perceptions about herself, deepens her relationships with others, and enlarges her world view.

True Love’s First Kiss is a compilation of the first three books in this ongoing series.

About the Author

The product of a verbally gifted family, Heidi Garrett is possibly the least loquacious of them all. While her Uncle John created off-the-cuff characters like King Machi-Machi and her Uncle James turned otherwise ordinary moments into O. Henry stories, she would often sit dazzled and silent, thrilled that these were ‘her people,’ as Grandma would say.
Despite the verbal inadequacy that shadowed Heidi whenever she was in her family’s presence, she never stopped writing in secret. Whether it was angsty teen poetry, the personal journals she has since burned (imagine bonfires), passionate letters to the editor, purgative song lyrics, or simply imagined vignettes, Heidi has played with words all of her life.
Bottom line: she loves stories and the people who tell them.
